Toddlers lick floors. Cats walk across counters and then groom their paws. Whatever you clean with, small household members end up ingesting traces of it — which is why our crews default to low-VOC, biodegradable products in every home, not just on request. Here's what we've learned about choosing products that are genuinely gentle without being useless.
The two combinations to never, ever mix
Before anything else: bleach + anything acidic (vinegar, many toilet-bowl cleaners) releases chlorine gas, and bleach + ammonia (many glass cleaners) produces chloramine vapour. Both can send a family to the emergency room in a poorly ventilated Malaysian bathroom. If you keep bleach at home, it works alone, diluted, with the window open — full stop.
Reading the label like a professional
Ignore the front of the bottle; "natural" and "green" are marketing, not chemistry. Turn it around and look for three things: a full ingredient disclosure (brands with nothing to hide list everything), the signal word — products marked "Danger" or "Corrosive" have no place in a home with crawling children — and fragrance load. Heavy perfume is the most common trigger for kids with asthma or eczema, and cats lack the liver enzyme to process many essential oils, so "smells like a spa" can be worse than unscented and slightly less shiny.
Gentle swaps that actually work
- All-purpose spray → diluted dish soap handles 80% of household soil. For the rest, a plant-based surfactant spray with an ecolabel certification.
- Glass cleaner → 1:1 white vinegar and water with a microfibre cloth. Streak-free and totally pet-safe once dry.
- Floor cleaner → skip the "fresh pine" concentrates (phenols are toxic to cats) and use a pH-neutral floor soap. Floors are the highest-exposure surface in the house for both babies and pets.
- Mould spots → hydrogen peroxide 3% instead of chlorine bleach: same whitening on grout, no lingering chlorine residue at nose height of a toddler.
- Drain maintenance → boiling water and enzyme treatments weekly, rather than caustic crystals stored under a sink a two-year-old can open.
Storage is half the safety
Most childhood poisoning incidents involve products in reach, not products in use. Move everything above shoulder height or behind a child-locked door, keep products in original bottles (never decanted into drink bottles), and throw away anything without a legible label.
